Canadian Float Glass Initiative: Expression of Interest Update

  • Jun 22
  • 2 min read

Over the past several months, Fenestration Canada has gathered Expressions of Interest from manufacturers, processors, and other participants across the Canadian glass and fenestration supply chain.

The objective is simple. Provide prospective float glass manufacturers, investors, and government stakeholders with a clearer picture of Canadian demand and the types of glass products our market is looking for through this initiative.

We are pleased to report that participation continues to grow.

Based on responses received to date, participating companies currently represent:

• Approximately 276 TPD (tonnes per day) of mid-case demand

• A range of approximately 228-325 TPD, depending on purchasing commitment assumptions

• Approximately 54%-77% of our initial 420 TPD benchmark

The responses received so far represent participation from across Canada and throughout the value chain, including residential manufacturers, commercial participants, IGU producers, and architectural processors.

In parallel with the Expression of Interest process, Fenestration Canada continues discussions with multiple international float glass manufacturers regarding the Canadian market opportunity. These discussions are helping inform industry perspectives on market demand, logistics, product requirements, and broader project viability.

The initiative has also attracted engagement from stakeholders across multiple levels of government, including ministerial-level discussions within the federal government and ongoing conversations with provincial and municipal partners. These discussions are increasingly focused on understanding what conditions would be required to support a credible manufacturing investment in Canada.

While significant work remains, the conversation has progressed well beyond whether Canada possesses sufficient demand to support domestic float glass manufacturing capacity. The focus is increasingly shifting toward how a viable project could be structured and what information prospective operators and investors require to evaluate the opportunity properly.

Additional participation remains important.

Every additional response improves the quality of information being shared with potential operators, investors, and government stakeholders and helps ensure the Canadian market is accurately represented as discussions continue.

As a reminder, individual company information provided through the Expression of Interest process is being held in confidence by me and is not shared with the Fenestration Canada Board of Directors, other participants, government stakeholders, prospective investors, or prospective float glass operators. Updates such as this one are based solely on aggregated and anonymized information.

Should a credible operator and investment structure emerge, I will personally contact participating companies to confirm their interest and obtain their permission before making any introductions or sharing company-specific information.

If your organization has not yet completed an Expression of Interest, we encourage you to participate. Here's the link - https://forms.gle/WFcNe644cZqXhib68

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Your participation is helping shape one of the most significant manufacturing discussions currently underway within the Canadian fenestration industry.

Humbly Yours,
