Navigating Specifications

10:30am - 12:00pm

In this session, we’ll explore how specifications are driving requirements outside of typical regulatory mechanisms and how that's shaping the build environment.

The 3/8″ Question: Condensation at Windowsills — Myth, Mechanism, and Measured Results

1:00pm - 2:00pm

Is that 3/8″ strip of insulation at the window sill really preventing condensation — inside the wall or on the interior surface — or, as some argue, is it blocking drainage and better left out altogether? What does the physics actually tell us? Studies conducted by NRC beginning around 2010 shed light on many of these questions. Under controlled winter conditions, researchers examined how rough opening insulation, air leakage, pressure differences, and drainage detailing affect interior surface temperatures and condensation potential. The findings may not align with long-held assumptions.

This session steps past opinion and looks at how heat, air, and moisture actually behave at the rough opening. We’ll examine condensation risk, the role of air sealing versus thermal resistance, and why drainage at the sill may be just as critical as insulation. If we have to prioritize between marginal thermal gains and reliable water management, where should we stand? The 3/8″ question may be small — but the implications are not.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for Fenestration Materials

2:30pm - 3:30pm

As embodied carbon becomes an increasingly important consideration in construction, manufacturers, builders, and designers are looking for credible ways to understand and communicate the environmental impacts of building products. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provide a transparent, standardized framework for quantifying these impacts through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

In this session, Dr. Shiva Zargar will introduce the fundamentals of EPDs and explain how they apply specifically to fenestration products. The discussion will explore how Product Category Rules (PCRs), service life assumptions, and life-cycle boundaries influence environmental impact results.

Participants will gain practical insights into how EPDs are developed, verified, and used to support transparent environmental reporting, helping manufacturers and industry professionals better navigate the growing demand for credible sustainability data.
