Tempered glass in windows
What is the code concering requirement for tempered glass in exterior windows located close to a tub or hot tub in the home. Some material I see references that if a window is closer than 60" to the tub in any direction, then tempered glass is required. I believe this is a US code but it may be the same in Canada?
Thanks. Nick Stratis

Hello Nick, The requirement for safety glass in proximity to a tub or shower is somewhat vague in the 2015 NBC. Section 9.6.1.4 Types of Glass and Protection of Glass, clause 6 says "Glass other than safety glass shall not be used for a shower or bathtub enclosure". The term enclosure would cause one to think the glass would need to be part of the device enclosure, therefore not a window outside of the immediate tub/shower perimeter. 202NBC says virtually the same thing but references the CGSB Safety Glass standard. That said, it would be prudent to add safety glass to a window with a low sill height (below guard height of 900mm) and in a location where a person exiting a tub/shower might slip and impact it.
